Aquatic invasive plants can outcompete native species, leading to a loss of biodiversity and disruption of ecological balance.
The removal of aquatic invasive plants offers various benefits, including restoring native ecosystems, improving water quality, enhancing recreational opportunities, protecting infrastructure, mitigating habitat loss, and preventing the spread of invasive species.
These efforts contribute to the preservation of biodiversity, the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems, and the well-being of communities relying on these resources.
Before beginning the suction weed harvesting process, it's essential to assess the area to be treated and develop a plan based on factors such as the type and extent of weed growth, water depth, accessibility, and environmental considerations.
Suction weed harvesting equipment typically consists of a floating or amphibious vessel equipped with a suction pump, intake hose, a collection chamber or conveyor system, and many other configurations. The equipment may be mounted on a boat, barge, or specialized vehicle depending on the size and configuration of the water body.
The suction weed harvesting vessel is maneuvered into position over the target area. The intake hose is lowered into the water, and the pump generates a vacuum to draw in water along with submerged vegetation.
As divers locate and target seaweed patches, they extract the vegetation from the sediment and use the use suction device to convey it to the surface. The suction equipment may be operated by surface support personnel, allowing divers to focus on precise weed removal without the added burden of managing the equipment.
Throughout the operation, divers and surface support personnel monitor equipment performance, weed removal efficiency, and any potential environmental impacts. Follow-up monitoring may be necessary to assess the effectiveness of weed removal and address any regrowth or new infestations.
Check out this video of our Diver Assisted Suction Harvesting system in action! We are equipped to scuba dive up to 30ft and harvest invasive aquatic plants!
All of our divers are PADI or SDI open water certified!
